Instructions on how to properly call 911

The E-911 phone number was created in 1968 by the US Government to create a simple universal number people could easily remember and be able to use for emergencies.

The first call was made on February 16th, 1968 in Haleyville, Alabama

Anytime you have an emergency and need immediate help, pick up any working phone and dial 9-1-1. The call is free anywhere in the United States and Canada.

Guide for Types of Calls

Call 9-1-1 for these type of situations:       Do not call 9-1-1 if your call is in reference to:
  • Medical Emergency
  • You are in an Accident
  • There is a Fire
  • Your Safety is At Risk
  • A Crime is in Progress
  • A fight or Robbery
  • Any Dangerous Situation
  • You or a Family Member is Missing

  • You locked your keys in your car
  • You need directions
  • You need a police report
  • To report a crime that occurred some other time
  • Your pet has ran away

Please Call the local law enforcement phone number

to report these types of calls.

A highly trained 911 Operator will answer the Phone..."911, What is your emergency?"

Remember to try and remain calm and speak clearly.

If you dial 9-1-1 by mistake....DO NOT HANG UP tell the 911 operator you dialed 911 by mistake and wait for them to tell you it's ok to hang up the phone. If you hang up the phone without speaking to the 911 operator, they do not know if you are ok and will have to send the appropriate law enforcement to your location to follow up and make sure everything is ok.

The 911 Operator will ask you several questions for example:

  • What is the Emergency?
  • What is the location of the emergency?
  • Are you hurt?
  • Are you in a safe place?
  • Where are you calling from?
  • What is your name, Address?
  • What is your phone number?

If you are not sure if your situation is an emergency dial 9-1-1 and if necessary the 911 Operator will direct you to dial the local non-emergency phone number so the 911 line is open for other emergencies that occur.

If you have any questions on how to use 9-1-1 that were not answered online please contact your local 9-1-1 coordinator.

****END****Please take a moment and look at these Missing Children to see if you know the where abouts or anything that would help law enforcement find them.......
